You Don’t Have to Be a Teacher to Teach God’s Word
When we hear the word teacher, we often picture someone standing in front of a classroom.
But teaching doesn’t only happen in school.
Sometimes, the most important lessons happen at home, at the dinner table, in the car, on the playground, or during an ordinary conversation.
You don’t need to be a teacher to share God’s Word.
You simply need to live it and speak it.
Teach through your words.
Children listen.
They hear how we talk about other people. They hear whether we respond with kindness or anger. They hear whether we forgive or hold grudges.
When we choose words that are honest, respectful, patient, and encouraging, we are teaching God’s values in a language children can understand.
Teach through your actions.
Telling a child to be kind is important.
But showing kindness is even more powerful.
Let them see you help someone. Let them see you apologize when you are wrong. Let them see you forgive. Let them see you treat people with dignity even when nobody is watching.
These ordinary moments can become extraordinary lessons.
Teach through everyday situations.
A spilled drink can become a lesson about responsibility.
A disagreement between siblings can become a lesson about forgiveness.
Helping a neighbor can become a lesson about loving others.
Receiving something we didn’t expect can become a lesson about gratitude.
Life is full of opportunities to connect everyday experiences with God’s teachings.
Teach without forcing every moment.
Sharing God’s Word does not mean turning every conversation into a sermon.
Sometimes, a simple sentence is enough:
“How do you think Jesus would want us to treat someone in this situation?”
Or:
“We made a mistake. What can we learn from it?”
Faith becomes more meaningful when children learn how to apply it to real life.
And remember: children teach us, too.
Children can remind adults to ask questions, forgive quickly, celebrate small things, and approach life with wonder.
Teaching can be a two-way relationship.
We guide them—and sometimes, they remind us of lessons we have forgotten.
“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children.” — Deuteronomy 6:6–7
God’s Word isn’t meant to stay inside a classroom.
It is meant to be lived.
And every day gives us another opportunity to teach through the way we speak, serve, love, forgive, and live.
